PLANS to replace a community hall with one almost twice its size have been approved, despite objections from residents.

When they were advertised, the plans by Dalton-le-Dale Community Association for the hall in Dene Road, Dalton-le-Dale, divided local people.

Claiming a larger facility was needed to cater for the whole parish, the association proposed knocking down the present 120sq m building and replacing it with one measuring 220sq m.

It said a larger hall would be able to house outreach learning courses, a cyber caf, Internet access, coffee mornings and a mobile library.

Nine local people endorsed the proposals, writing letters of support to Easington District Council.

Howvever, opponents to the scheme drafted a 69-name petition and submitted eight letters of objection. Their concerns included a possible increase in traffic, parking problems and noise. They also felt the character of the village would be spoilt.

But a report to the district council's development control and licensing panel, said: "There would be no significant adverse effects on the character and appearance of the area or the amenities of local residents.

"The proposal would enhance community facilities and be of significant benefit."

The panel gave the hall its support.
