PUPILS have been given the chance to experience driving without actually moving.

More than 300 County Durham students, many under 17, had the opportunity to use the British School of Motoring's (BSM) driving simulator, which is touring the region.

The simulator, based on a Vauxhall Corsa, provides a realistic driving experience.

The roadshow, which forms part of BSM's road safety programme, allows students to take a theory test and hazard perception exercises.

"Learning to drive is a number one priority for most young people," said roadshow manager Andy Brown.

"The roadshow gives students the chance to drive a car in a safe and controlled environment, and to have some fun at the same time."

Schools taking part in the roadshow included Greenfield Community College, Newton Aycliffe, Harelaw Special School, in Stanley, Seaham School of Technology, Deerness Valley School, in Durham, St Bede's RC School, in Peterlee, and Moorside Community College, Consett.
