WHEN Jack and Betty Greathead were wed, they were lucky to even celebrate one day of being married.
They were spending their wedding night at a friend's house when an air raid sent then scurrying to a shelter.
And after the all-clear was sounded, they found themselves in hot water again, when an air-raid warden woke them up to say light was coming through their curtains.
But that was all 60 years ago, and this week, the couple are celebrating their diamond anniversary at their home in Hollygarth Close, Great Ayton.
They received several congratulation cards from friends and wellwishers, including a card from the Queen and a bouquet of flowers from their landlord, Broadacres Housing Association.
Betty, 84, says the secret of a happy marriage is "broad shoulders and a thick skin", while Jack, 88, said it was all about love of the family.
The couple celebrated with a meal at the Royal Oak Hotel
