YOUNGSTERS will be able to receive free swimming at Newton Aycliffe and Spennymoor Leisure Centres from February 17.

Sedgefield Borough Council's leisure services department has obtained funding for the scheme from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

The financial boost means the department can now provide free swimming to the under-18s living in the borough's neighbourhood renewal areas - West Cornforth, the Trimdons, Shildon and Newton Aycliffe's west ward.

Free transport is available to those youngsters from West Cornforth and the Trimdons.

A spokesman for the council said: "Hopefully this will give youngsters the chance to get involved in regular sport, particularly swimming, within the neighbourhood renewal areas."

The swimming is available between 6pm and 7pm Monday to Friday and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to noon and 2pm to 3pm.

Anyone wishing to become a scheme member needs to complete a registration form and show proof of address.

Membership cards must presented at the leisure centres to receive a free swim and travel costs will be reimbursed by producing a return bus ticket.

Registration forms are available from Cornforth Community House on (01740) 652000, Trimdon Community College on (01429) 881251, Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre on (01325) 312520 and at Shildon Sunnydale Leisure Centre on (01388) 777340.
