A SCHOOL is celebrating after securing £560,000 for new sports facilities.
The bid was made for Whickham School by Gateshead Council through the New Opportunities Fund for Physical Education and Sport.
It will be used to provide an all-weather sports area, with three multi-sports areas, floodlighting and changing facilities.
A bid for £25m has also been submitted to provide a new building on the school site.
New tennis courts have been added in recent months and a grant was made by the council to Blaydon Tennis Club to provide equipment to support its community coaching programme.
Frank Earl, Labour Action Team leader for Whickham North, said: "We will continue to press for the maximum investment possible for the education of all our young people.
"This investment further enhances the role of Whickham School as a specialist sports college.
