A TOWN'S speeding drivers are again in the spotlight.

A mobile speed camera enforcement unit will be monitoring vehicles along the 40mph A179 linking Hartlepool with the A19, this week, following complaints of speeding.

The announcement comes just days after it was revealed that police in Cleveland caught 1,458 drivers ignoring the 30mph limit on Easington Road, Hartlepool, in just over four hours.

Mick Bennett, spokesman for the Cleveland Safety Camera Partnership, said: "The deployment of this camera is in direct response to requests from the public, which suggests that people are as concerned about speed as we are.

"The objective of the Cleveland Safety Camera Partnership is to reduce casualties on our roads by reducing speeds and changing drivers' attitude towards speed, particularly in areas where we know that other road users are at risk and I am delighted that the public are working with us to achieve this goal."
