NEWCASTLE UNITED will make a £4m summer move for Darren Ambrose after watching the Ipswich Town midfielder again on Saturday.

After Newcastle director of football Gordon Milne filed a report on Ambrose from Ipswich's game at Sheffield United on January 25, three Magpies officials saw the 18-year-old against Bradford City on Saturday.

Ambrose, who came off the bench at Valley Parade, is the latest talented Portman Road product following the emergence of Newcastle duo Kieron Dyer and Titus Bramble. The England Youth international made his first team debut against Arsenal at the end of last season and has impressed since Joe Royle took over at Ipswich earlier this season.

Sir Bobby Robson is keen to continue his policy of recruiting promising young English talent and will be armed with a formidable transfer war chest this summer if Newcastle qualify for the Champions League again.

While Robson is keen on Ambrose, he is likely to miss out on Everton midfielder Thomas Gravesen - the subject of a Newcastle bid shortly before the transfer window closed last Friday.

Gravesen, who is currently out of favour at Everton, said: "The most important thing is that we're winning, and we're doing that.

"The manager knows I'm ready. There's no conflict between him and me."

Newcastle's controversial Premiership fixture at Middlesbrough was yesterday rearranged for Wednesday, March 5, with a 7.45pm kick off. A Premier League spokesman last night confirmed they had still not received a complaint from Newcastle about the postponement.

St James' Park was last night awarded England Under-21s' crucial European Championships qualifier with Turkey on April 1, 24 hours before the Stadium of Light hosts a full international between the countries.

England Under-21s coach David Platt said: "St James' Park is a magnificent stadium and the perfect venue for a match of this importance.

"With Newcastle players such as Jermaine Jenas, Titus Bramble and Shola Ameobi playing key parts in our matches this season, I hope that we would get a big crowd to roar us on."

''Turkey will be a tough test, and the fans can give us a massive boost.'' Both teams have taken maximum points from their matches so far.
