REGIONAL development agency One NorthEast has hit its mid-year targets for job creation and retention and business growth.

The organisation said it had created or safeguarded 1,803 jobs and created or attracted 129 businesses between April and September 2002.

It was also responsible for reclaiming 30 hectares of brownfield land and creating 5,400 learning opportunities.

Alan Johnson, Department of Trade and Industry Minister, said: "Progress during this quarter is testimony to the commitment and hard work of their staff and their regional partners.

"A priority for One NorthEast will be to continue to drive forward the Government's manufacturing strategy."

Mike Collier, agency chief executive, said it was important to concentrate on the work at hand.

He said: "It is important that in celebrating this success, we do not lose sight of the wider role of the agency as a regional catalyst and provider of strategic leadership.

"Groundbreaking, innovative projects such as our review of business support services and the Centres of Excellence will enable us, with partners, to continue to realise the North-East's potential."
