A £20M mental health hospital in the North-East was given the go-ahead yesterday.

Members of Darlington Borough Council's planning committee approved the Private Finance Initiative-funded hospital, which will form part of the West Park development in the town.

The hospital will replace facilities at the Pierremont Unit, at Darlington Memorial Hospital, the Beaumont Ward, the Faverdale Day Unit, both in Darlington, and the Gables unit, at Sedgefield.

The hospital will provide in-patient rooms, including mother and baby rooms, single rooms for older people with mental health problems, intensive care rooms, recovery rooms and out-patient and day hospital facilities.

There will be a range of support services, including a coffee lounge, shop, dining room and a prayer room.

Six single-storey buildings will be grouped around a central courtyard.
