PLANNERS have turned down a developer's bid to build a stately home, based on a 17th Century architect's plans, for the second time.
Sir John Vanbrugh is credited with the design of Castle Howard and Blenheim Palace - and left behind plans for a similar but much smaller building.
Three hundreds years after Sir John's death, property developer Leon Howard, wants to persuade Richmondshire District Council to allow him to use the designs as the basis for a new home just south of Tunstall, near Catterick.
His bid was rejected in 2000 as the design was thought to be too audacious, and earlier this week the idea was again thrown out by planners.
"It is beautiful but in the wrong place and we have no choice but to refuse it," said Councillor Richard Dunn.
