PUPILS have made their own garden furniture for an outdoor classroom they are creating on an overgrown allotment site.
Years 10 and 11 boys from Parkside School, Willington, joined in joinery classes at Bishop Auckland College where they made four two metre long wooden benches for their plot at the Rosedale and Victoria allotments.
The group is developing the garden with a £13,660 grant from the Millennium Fund.
They have laid paths and created raised beds where they will grow organic vegetables.
Primary schoolchildren will share the scheme, which is supported by Groundwork, Neighbourhood Watch, the Allotment Association and Shildon and Darlington Training.
After the success of the first 12-week joinery course, a second group has started making another four benches, including one due to be given to Auckland Castle.
