A PROJECT to encourage people on Teesside to explore the life, times and legacy of Captain James Cook is being launched today.
Each of Middlesbrough's 13 public libraries will get collections of books about the town's famous son, who was the 18th Century's most illustrious maritime explorer.
The book collections will be marked by a Captain Cook Life and Legacy logo and are available to the public for loan.
Councillor Bob Kerr, executive member for culture and sport at Middlesbrough Council, said: "We hope that the life and legacy project will encourage Middlesbrough's young people, in particular, to take a greater interest in history.
"Cook is a natural choice as he made such a major contribution in so many spheres of life."
Timeline displays will tour the town's libraries to promote the collections.
Educational material and resources guides will also be made available to schools.
