THE development of Richmond's former railway station takes another step forward next month.

A feasibility study into a planned revamp is to begin next month and is due to be completed in July.

The Friends of Richmond Station, who are keen to turn the 19th Century listed building into a community and business centre, hope to appoint an architectural practice by the end of this month.

Spokesman Jim Jack said the group was delighted by the level of interest shown by a number of practices which would prepare presentations for the Friends' committee.

"The challenge of fitting community interests, economic viability and complementing existing provision within the framework of a listed building has obviously offered a stimulating opportunity to everyone.

"We are also looking to the successful firm to bring its own ideas to the table so that, in July, we will have a way forward which enables the district council to re-affirm its unanimous support for the efforts of our group on behalf of the area."

The group is waiting for approval from the Charity Commission for the formation of a charitable trust to oversee the development of the station.

A fundraising campaign will then begin.

"Backing is in place to fully fund the feasibility study and planning for a newsletter, fundraising activities and development of a website has begun," said Mr Jack.
