A GERMAN shepherd-cross left alone in a house for five days after its owner died needs a new home.

Ali was taken to the National Canine Defence League (NCDL) kennels at Sadberge, near Darlington, after being found by dog wardens.

Instead of being in council care with the threat of being put down, she will be rehomed.

Catherine Gillie, the league's Darlington manager, said: "Ali is a beautiful, vibrant and healthy dog who was brought to our care when her owner had died. She would make a great addition to any home with adult company - she seems to be especially fond of men."

A spokeswoman for the league said: "Ali was lucky to be brought into the NCDL. Often local authorities take ownership of homeless dogs and will try to find homes through animal welfare organisations.

"However, spaces are not guaranteed and could result in dogs being put to sleep by the local authorities. The NCDL, on the other hand, will never put down a healthy dog."

The NCDL is currently promoting its free Canine Care Card service, which ensures that, in the event of a pet owner's death, their dog will be taken to the NCDL where it will be cared for by qualified staff and eventually rehomed to a new family.

There are more than 3,500 card carriers in the UK and, last year, the league was able to care for and find new homes for 23 dogs whose owners had passed away.

The spokeswoman said: "People will be safe in the knowledge their dog will be cared for with the same love and attention you gave him."

Ali needs a home with adults in the Darlington, Durham or Yorkshire area. Anyone interested in rehoming Ali, or wanting more information about the Canine Care Card, can contact the league on (01325) 333114.
