EMILY SARSFIELD, 19, from Durham, has represented East Midlands Universities Officer Training Corps in the British Army's UK Ski Championships at Aviemore, Scotland.

Earlier this year, she competed in the Army's Alpine Championships in Serre Chevalier, France. Ms Sarsfield, an officer cadet, is a member of both the British Universities' Ski Team and the England Alpine Ski Team.

GREEN AWARDS: Two divisions of Newcastle City Council joined a European energy-saving scheme yesterday. The Cityworks' city build and environmental services departments have been registered under the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme. The council will look at reducing its use of fuel, electricity, and water, and cutting the amount of waste going to landfill.

SECURITY MATS: Customers using a town's pubs, cafes and restaurants will be reminded by police to keep their property safe as they enjoy their drinks. Gateshead police have joined forces with ADT Fire and Security to produce 5,000 beer mats which will be used across the borough. The yellow mats carry messages reminding people to watch their belongings and make sure their home is secure.

AGENCY ROADSHOW: The Multi-Agency Resource Centre will be in the community centre car park in Burnopfield, near Stanley, today, from noon to 8pm. The mobile centre allows people to speak to police and council officials. It will be in Front Street, Leadgate, near Consett, tomorrow, and in Fines Road, Medomsley, on Thursday.

MOTORISTS MEET: The Durham branch of the Institute of Advanced Motorists is inviting drivers to its monthly meeting next Tuesday, at 7.30pm, in Framwellgate Moor and Pity Me Workingmen's Club.
