A FORMER boxer who attacked a teenager in the street - stamping on his head when he was unconscious - was jailed for 21 months yesterday.

Stephen Bird, 22, gave police a chilling description of the beating he gave to Daniel Duke,17, in Redcar, east Cleveland.

Bird said: "I steamed his head in, I jumped on his head. Even if I get locked up every week for fighting I will carry on fighting. I am a boxer by trade. I don't care about his injuries, it was a warning."

Bird told officers that he was an amateur boxer who could not box any more but still continued to train, said Sarah Mallett, prosecuting.

She said that Daniel was returning home from a visit to the JobCentre in Redcar on October 1 when Bird ran up to him and hit him, knocking him to the floor.

He was not moving, and a man in a nearby house saw Bird and his friend, Stuart Anderson, standing over him kicking him repeatedly.

The witness thought they had killed their victim.

Bird, of Mersey Road, and Anderson of Henry Street, both Redcar, both admitted actual bodily harm.

Bird was jailed and Anderson was ordered to do 200 hours' community punishment, pay £500 compensation, £150 costs and £150 towards his defence.
