A MAN who passed on cannabis resin mouth-to-mouth while kissing a prisoner during a visit to Durham Jail's female wing was yesterday jailed for three months.

David Campbell, 40, of Exeter Place, Sheffield, admitted supplying a class B drug while visiting inmate Carol Edgar in January last year. Durham Crown Court heard that half a gramme of the drug was recovered from Edgar three days after the visit.

NEW CHAIRMAN: Andrew Thompson, 37, has been appointed chairman of the National Farmers' Union's tenants committee for County Durham and Northumberland. Mr Thompson, of Murton Hall Farm, Wingate, County Durham, farms 850 acres in Durham, of which 300 are rented, and 300 acres rented by his family in Ponteland. He has highlighted proposals for the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy as being the main challenge facing the tenanted sector.

HADLEY VISITS: Tony Hadley, one of the stars of ITV's new reality show Reborn in the USA, will be in the region next month. The lead singer of Spandau Ballet will be at Darlington Civic Theatre on Friday, April 25, singing some of the band's hits, as well as more recent tunes. COPPER APPEAL: Police have renewed an appeal for information after thieves stole a drum of copper wire worth several thousand pounds. The drum was taken from the rear of the Joyce Loebl unit, in Kingsway North, Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead, on January 31. FIRM AWARD: Walkers Snack Foods, in Peterlee, east Durham, has won a bronze award in the large company section of The Food and Drink Federation Community Partnership Awards. The award recognised the firm's commitment to the community, and was presented by MP Margaret Beckett at a ceremony in London.
