FIREFIGHTERS were called to tackle a blaze at a flat above the post office in Eston High Street, Middlesbrough, on Tuesday night. The fire is believed to have been started by someone breaking into the unoccupied property and setting fire to an armchair. A neighbouring flat was severely damaged in the fire.

LONG SERVICE: Joan Loughran, a receptionist and secretary at Teesside High School, Eaglescliffe, will have completed 25 years' service at the school this week. She has been at the school since 1978, and has decided to work part-time.

SUPPER NIGHT: A quiz and supper night will be held at Guisborough Rugby Club on Wednesday, April 2, at 7.30pm. Proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK. Tickets are £5, available on (01287) 634571.

TEES TALK: An illustrated talk on upper Teesdale will be presented by Mark Stokeld at the United Reformed Church Hall, Station Road, Redcar, on Tuesday, at 7.30pm. Admission is £1.25.

ANNUAL MEETING: Warrenby Residents' Association will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday, from 6.30pm at Coatham Community Learning Centre, in Coatham Road. The meeting is open to the public.

QUIZ NIGHT: There will be a quiz night and a pie and peas supper at Redcar Cricket Club on Monday, at 7pm. Tickets are £2.50, available on (01642) 485370. Proceeds will help restore Redcar's town clock.

RED NOSES: Pupils and staff at The Norton School, Norton, will be celebrating Red Nose Day tomorrow by holding a non-uniform and wacky hair day. They will pay £1 to take part.

COFFEE MORNING: St Hilda's Church Ladies' Group will hold a coffee morning on Saturday, from 10am to noon at the church hall, in Mersey Road, Redcar. Admission is 30p.
