AN arson investigation was under way last night following a fire at a scrapyard.
Firefighters were called to Whessoe Road salvage yard, in Darlington, near the North Road B&Q store, shortly after 11pm on Saturday after several calls from people who reported that the scrapyard was alight.
Two appliances from Darlington attended and firefighters spent 30 minutes bringing the fire under control. Police officers were also at the scene.
One of the yard's security fences, which backs on to the Darlington to Bishop Auckland railway line, had been set alight.
The fire service informed train drivers of the blaze as a health and safety precaution.
A total of 11 scrap cars were severely damaged in the blaze, which is being treated as arson, and a police investigation is being carried out.
Several youths were spotted in the area shortly before the fire started.
