GOLFERS have scored a fundraising success to help sick children.

Brancepeth Castle Golf Club, near Durham City, raised £11,100 towards the work of The Butterwick Children's Hospice, in Stockton, during Gary Cooper's year as captain.

The money was raised through events including a pro-am tournament.

Mr Cooper said: "Butterwick Children's Hospice is a wonderful place, caring for desperately ill local children, and I was delighted to have chosen to support their work during my captaincy.

"I would like to thank all the people involved in making my year so successful."

Hospice fundraiser Barbara Marr said: "Our children rely on people like Brancepeth Castle Golf Club to help make a real difference to their lives.

"This is the second year Brancepeth has supported us and we have been very fortunate to have been chosen again by Dave Barton, this year's captain.

"Continued support is exactly what we need. As the needs of our families grow, so do our fundraising needs.

"Members of the club have really taken the children's hospice to their hearts and we are sincerely grateful for their kindness."
