Darlington striker Glenn Naylor hopes to put his injury nightmare behind him after making a goalscoring return at the weekend.

The 30-year-old has spent the last three months battling to overcome a serious knee injury.

And Naylor is looking forward to spending more time on the pitch than on the treatment table after coming off the bench to score his side's crucial second goal in Saturday's 3-1 win over Bury. A victory that puts paid to any lingering relegation fears.

"Hopefully I've put the worst behind me and I can concentrate on my football again," said Naylor.

"It's been an absolute nightmare being out for so long.

"It seems to have been one thing after another."

However, the York-born forward is concentrating on an injury-free end to a frustrating campaign, which has been plagued by a number of setbacks.

"It was great to be back on the pitch and obviously great to get a goal as well," said Naylor.

Naylor admits he still has a long way to go before returning to full fitness after replacing Danny Mellanby as a 76th minute substitute - his first appearance since November.

He said: "I'm still having a few problems with my knees so we'll just have to see how things go.

"I've still got a bit of work to do because I'm still not fully fit.

"I've only played in a couple of reserve games so I'm still struggling a bit."

Saturday's win takes Quakers seven points clear of the relegation zone with six games remaining. And Naylor believes that one more victory will guarantee Third Division football next season.

"We were desperate for the three points and I think we fully deserved them in the end," said Naylor

"We're almost safe now and another win will probably do it.

"We had a bit of a shaky start but once we got the equaliser we battered them.

"It was another good result for us and it's nice to have six points from our last two games."

Naylor is expected to play for Darlington reserves when they entertain Scarborough on Wednesday night.
