FAR right extremists have revealed more plans to contest council seats in the May local elections.
The National Front (NF) has said it is putting forward candidates to contest five wards in Newcastle - the first time since the mid-1980s.
In Sunderland, the British National Party (BNP) has pledged to contest every seat up for election.
The BNP has also put forward candidates to contest three Newcastle wards. The party is also fighting for seven wards in Darlington and three in Stockton, in a concerted effort to secure seats in the North-East.
A spokesman for the National Front said it was planning to drop 7,000 leaflets through letterboxes in Newcastle.
A spokesman for the Tyne and Wear Anti-Facist Association said: "As far as we are concerned there is little to choose between the BNP and the National Front, other than the NF is more up front about its agenda.
