POLICE visited a village club last night to ask regulars about the death of a 59-year-old man.

Barrie Lee was attacked on Tuesday night last week as he walked home from Langley Park Workingmen's Club, near Durham City, at 11.35pm.

Mr Lee, who had spent the night in the club with his wife, Christine, was found unconscious in Rose Terrace, yards from his Ivy Terrace home.

Mr Lee, who suffered a single blow to his head, did not regain consciousness. He died in Newcastle General Hospital on Saturday when his life support machine was switched off.

Two women, aged 43 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of assault and have been given police bail until the middle of the month.

Police took a mobile police station to the village last night. At about 11.30pm, detectives and plain clothes officers walked the streets to talk to passers-by who may have been in the area last Tuesday.

Detective Inspector Dave Wolfe said: "I'm puzzled by the low key response we have had, as just about everyone locally will have been aware of the incident.

"Our efforts are now geared to securing every bit of information we can to build up the fullest picture of what exactly happened to Mr Lee.''

Anyone who can help is asked to call Consett CID on (01207) 504204 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
