FIREFIGHTERS have been tackling a fire covering about 100 acres of the North York Moors.

Teams from four different stations have been at the scene high on the moors at Blakey Ridge.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Fire Brigade said units from Kirkbymoorside, Northallerton, Helmsley and Boroughbridge had been fighting the blaze.

"We have tended to leave it overnight when it has died down, but we have been called back several times since Monday as it keeps breaking out because the ground conditions are so dry."

She added: "It underlines how important it is for people, particularly visitors, not to discard cigarettes or matches on the moors which are very dry so early in the season."
