CONCERNS have been raised that a controversial plan to build 21 homes on a factory site in Middleton St George, near Darlington, could cause problems with a planned new school.
Despite objections from the village's borough councillor, Darlington Mayor Doris Jones, the homes will be built on the premises of RAH Transport and Malcolm Engineering after councillors approved the plan yesterday.
The homes, which are all two-storey, four-bedroom family accommodation, will be built on land off Killinghall Row, Yarm Road, in a joint development between Thoroughbred Homes and Clarion Homes.
The parish council expressed concern about the loss of local industry and whether there was a need for more houses in the village.
Coun Jones, speaking on behalf of Middleton St George Parish Council, said: "We have approved a new school in Middleton St George for 134 pupils. Since that figure was arrived at, there have been 134 more houses to be built and no consideration has been given to those pupils."
Planning committee councillors, Gerald Lee and Sheila Brown, proposed a motion to defer the application until more consultation was carried out, but the motion was defeated and the committee approved the scheme.
