PLANS to create a pedestrianised area in Darlington town centre are to be discussed by councillors tomorrow.
Darlington Borough Council's cabinet will be asked to approve the appointment of an external consultant, at a cost of £500,000, to oversee the project.
The appointment will only be made if a funding application is approved by the Tees Valley Partnership.
If approved, work on pedestrianising the town centre is likely to begin in the spring or summer of 2005.
It will mean buses and taxis will be banned from four main streets in Darlington - Prospect Place, High Row, Skinnergate, and the south end of Northgate.
The central shopping area will be left for the exclusive use of pedestrians between 9am and 5.30pm.
The changes are designed to increase the competitiveness of the area as a shopping centre and to make the town centre safer for pedestrians.
