A CHARITY shop is the first in the region to display an international peace prize awarded last year.

Oxfam was presented with the Seoul Peace Prize in September in recognition of its work both at home and overseas.

The citation says the charity - chosen from 96 recommendations - is recognised for its "distinguished contributions to world peace and the harmony of mankind".

The prize was inaugurated in 1988 to reflect the international relations sparked by the Olympic Games held in the city the same year.

There have been six recipients to date - and Oxfam's plaque has remained on show at the charity's headquarters in Oxford until now.

However, it has made the journey north to the shop in Richmond, North Yorkshire, at the request of manager, Betty Clayton, who saw the award displayed at an Oxfam forum in Durham over the winter and asked if she could put it on show in her shop.

"People who donate, volunteer and buy things from Oxfam can all share in the charity's achievement," she said.

"Without them, it would not have been possible."
