A MAN who attacked a couple with a claw hammer walked free from court yesterday.
Carl MacPherson, 41, of Tynedale Crescent, Houghton, County Durham, joined in a fracas outside Flares in Crowtree Road, Sunderland, after a call from his sister saying she was caught up in a fight.
Ian Kenny was struck on the head with the hammer and his girlfriend, Pauline Spence, received a glancing blow on the back.
MacPherson pleaded guilty to affray at Newcastle Crown Court and was ordered to carry out 100 hours community punishment, pay £400 costs and £250 to each victim.
