THE TV programme Songs of Praise is putting the spotlight on the rejuvenation of Sunderland's fortunes.

Fronted by Olympic gold medallist Jonathan Edwards, the BBC crew moved into the city to start filming this week.

A BBC spokesman said the production team had already made recordings at Emmanuel College in Gateshead and St Peter's Church, Sunderland.

Professor Rosemary Cramp spoke about the Venerable Bede, while Jonathan Edwards interviewed Sir Peter Vardy of motor dealer Reg Vardy.

Yesterday the crew filmed at the Museum and Winter Gardens in Sunderland, while today they will be at the city's National Glass Centre.

The main service will be recorded at Sunderland Minster on April 24. Entrance is by tickets only. The service will be broadcast on May 18.
