A NORTH-EAST man is encouraging other men to come forward and join what is believed to be the region's first slimming club for men.

Weighing 19 stone and following a family health scare, Ian Rand decided he needed to lose some weight, so last September he joined a Slimming World class. In the seven months since, he has lost four stones and has set up a class in Hartlepool solely for men.

The 38-year-old said: "When I went along to my first class I was the only man surrounded by about 30 to 40 women, and it was pretty terrifying.

"I knew I needed to lose weight as I was having trouble buying clothes to fit, and there had been a health scare in my family.

"I think it is harder for men to acknowledge they need to lose weight and even harder for them to join a class. However, by holding a male-only class I hope to encourage them to come forward.

"I think as soon as they hear the word 'diet' that is it, but with this class you do not have to cut out your favourite foods just enjoy them in moderation."

The first class was held last Tuesday and Mr Rand, from Fishburn, County Durham, said he feared no one was going to turn up.

He said: "All day I had been worried that no one would turn up, but I had six people there, which is a good turn-out for the first night.

"I think this is the only male-only club outside Merseyside and Wales, and anyone who wants to come along will be more than welcome.

"They are not told how much weight they have to lose and can decide for themselves, but I am here to help them reach their goal."

Anyone who would like to take part in the classes is invited to go to the Mill House Leisure Centre, in Raby Road, Hartlepool, on Tuesdays. Classes begin at 7.30pm.
