A CYCLIST, who was knocked off his bike by a car more than a week ago, lost his fight for life yesterday.

Dr Ceri Williams, 47, was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with serious head injuries after the accident on the B6279 Ingleton to Darlington road on April 3.

He was then transferred to the intensive care unit of Middlesbrough General Hospital.

Police have confirmed that Dr Williams, a pathologist at the Memorial Hospital, did not regain consciousness and died yesterday morning.

The accident happened at 7.10pm, about a quarter of a mile east of the Walworth crossroads.

Dr Williams, of Elton Parade, Darlington, is said to have been knocked from his bike by a Volkswagen Polo. An 81-year-old man was questioned, but not arrested by police following the incident.

Last night, a police spokes-man said inquiries were continuing.

A spokeswoman for the health trust said it did not want to comment.

An inquest into Dr Williams' death will be opened in the next few days.
