An Easter Bank Holiday weekend blitz on the rivers, streams and still waters of County Durham and Northumberland netted 46 anglers not in possession of a rod licence.

Fisheries enforcement officers from the Environment Agency's Newcastle office found 383 valid licences holders fishing legally. The 46 without the requisite form were given a week to produce a licence or face a court summons and a fine of up to £2,500. The Agency has warned of further swoops to net rod licence dodgers in the near future.

AUTHOR'S TALK: Author Jane McGowan will give a talk about Alzheimer's Disease - she cared for her husband who had the condition - on Saturday, at 2pm, in Durham Clayport Library, Millennium Place, Claypath. Admission is free, but places must be booked by calling 0191-386 4003.

CHARITY PLAY: The Early Learning Centre, in Durham's Milburngate Centre, will hold a fun day, including sports, games and face-painting, on Wednesday May 7, to help raise money for the NSPCC's Children's Day.

FOOD PLAN: Durham City Council is being asked to grant planning permission for a hot food take-away outlet in a shop at Empire Buildings, near the Sherburn Road Estate.

FLAT BID: Planning permission is being sought from Durham City Council for first and second floor offices to be converted into a flat in Silver Street, in the city centre.

JAZZ SOUNDS: Jazz Girl and the Bicycle Thieves perform in the bar at Durham's Gala Theatre every Saturday afternoon between 1pm and 6pm. Admission is free.

ART DISPLAY: An exhibition of watercolours by local artist Robert Wilson is on display at The Discovery Centre, Seaton Holme, Easington Village. The exhibition, which runs until May 29, features local scenes, the Lakes and coastal areas.

HAPPY RETURNS: Volun-teers at the charity shop run by the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals in Front Street, Chester-le-Street, celebrated the shop's first anniversary on Saturday by offering customers birthday cake and Bucks Fizz.

COUNCIL AID: Shadforth Parish Council's donations to local groups over the past year have included £1,000 to Sherburn Hill Community Centre for refurbishment, £1,000 to the Shadforth Village Hall Association for new tables and chairs, and £20 to County Durham Victim Support.

MAST PLAN: Durham City Council has give Orange Personal Communications Systems planning permission to put up a replacement 30-metre telecommunication tower and equipment at Beacon Hill, off Church Street, Quarrington Hill.
