A COUNCIL leader is appealing to the new bosses of Anglo-Dutch steelmakers Corus to make a fact-finding visit to the region.
Former steelworker Councillor David Walsh, leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, wants incoming chief executive Phillipe Varin and his team to see for themselves the effectiveness of the Redcar operation, before making a decision about the future of the east Cleveland works.
His plea comes amid speculation that outgoing Corus chairman Sir Brian Moffat will announce restructuring plans at a board meeting tomorrow.
The plans could see up to 4,000 jobs being axed and the closure of the Redcar and Scunthorpe plants.
Coun Walsh said: "I would say it would be utter folly for a closure plan to be announced, based on the muse of a person who is on the way out."
