Four independent councillors are standing across Darlington.

John Hoodless, 60, who is an independent candidate for the Harrowgate Hill ward, said: "Harrowgate Hill has not had a community centre or youth club all the time I have lived here, unlike Red Hall, Firthmoor and Skerne Park.

"There is nothing for the teenagers to do and it causes problems.

"I will endeavour to ensure the old Harrowgate Hill Infant School is turned into a community centre or youth club instead of the land being sold off for housing developments."

Douglas Hardy, 59, independent candidate for the Bank Top Ward, said: "I want to provide a voice for the people of Darlington within the council.

"There is no democracy left in the council because of the cabinet system. I want to stand up for the individuals in Darlington against the political parties. I also disagree with the campaign against immigrants. A lot of people in the area are immigrants who have benefited the town over the last century."

Carol Lambird, 40, independent candidate for the Haughton West ward, said: "I will campaign for more consultation with local people about major issues.

"There have been a lot of things in recent years in this area that have gone ahead despite heavy local opposition. As an independent, I don't have to toe any party political line.

"I think there is a lack of democracy within the council.

"My campaign is about local people having more control over what happens."

Colin Fairman, independent candidate for the Eastbourne Ward, said he did not wish to outline his manifesto until after the election.
