PUPILS from Ferryhill Station Primary School have been brushing up on their knowledge of recycling.

The children have been taking part in a project run by Groundwork East Durham and Foreman Recycling, of Spennymoor.

Groundwork project officer Stephen Armstrong has been running the RMC Environment Fund Greenlink initiative with 31 of the pupils from the school for the past five weeks.

The project has aimed to increase young people's awareness of the benefits of recycling, reducing and reusing the rubbish they produce.

To get a better idea of what happens to their waste, they linked with a local business, Foreman Recycling, of Spennymoor, where they were able to see first-hand the sorting, washing and crushing of the materials to be recycled.

John Foreman, from the company, said: "We are always pleased to show young people around the site and to talk to them about the benefits of recycling."

The pupils used the knowledge and information gained to host a recycling day at the school, where they took part in activities ranging from junk modelling to a recycling theme drama.

Everyone involved also took part in an assembly, where they shared their findings with the whole school and were awarded certificates in recognition of their efforts.

Mr Armstrong said: "The Greenlink project has been a great success and the children have really enjoyed learning about recycling."
