ANOTHER weapon in the fight against heart disease is available in the North-East.
New drug Ezetrol could help patients who have difficulty in reaching safe levels of cholesterol, even though they are already on medication.
The move has been welcomed by Dr Stewart Findley, a GP from Bishop Auckland, County Durham.
Dr Findley, a member of the national Primary Care Cardiovascular Society, said: "Ezetrol represents a new treatment alternative for the many people who, despite taking cholesterol-lowering medication such as statins, still have difficulty achieving their cholesterol targets.
"This will be the first time ever that doctors can prescribe a drug that selectively targets absorption of cholesterol."
