Stanley has been chosen as the venue for a six-month trial of new police uniforms - because of the town's weather extremes.
About 40 officers in the town have been selected to test the new kit. It includes a waterproof high visibility blouson jacket, a black blouson jacket and combat-style trousers with thigh patch pockets. Fleeces replace NATO pullovers.
If it is suitable, the new kit could become standard for officers throughout Durham Constabulary.
A police spokesman said: "Stanley was chosen because of its geography and its extremes of weather - it is high and windy. If the uniforms work there in the summer and winter, they will be suitable for anywhere else. The trial will allow operational officers to evaluate the appearance, quality, durability and effectiveness of the new clothing."
Chief Supt Ian Irwin said: "Certainly the initial comments from officers have been very positive.
"There will be some suggestions for minor design amendments, but overall they are more comfortable. We also want to evaluate how members of the public perceive the new uniforms."
