THE Yorkshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) takes to road on Tuesday for the start of the National No Star Wars Tour.

Yorkshire CND worker Neil Kingsnorth will be travelling in a camper van for two weeks, meeting other campaigners at ten stops around the UK. There will be a protest at the base at Fylingdales on Thursday, June 5.

HEART RIDE: The annual cycle ride along Hadrian's Wall, in aid of the British Heart Foundation, is taking a rest after 20 years. The event this year moves to Newcastle. The Heart of the Tyne Cycle Ride, taking place on Sunday, July 13, will start and finish at Newburn Riverside Country Park. For further details, contact Anne Miller on 0191-478 6620.

DON'T FORGET: A summit will be held at the Redcar Bowl on Sunday, at 11am, to discuss the latest crisis in the Teesside steel industry. Leading industry figures, trade unionists, academics and MPs will be on the panel. The meeting starts at 11am and there will be room for 800 people.

GLASS ACT: People in the North-East are being urged to do their bit to mark National Glass Week, taking place from June 16 to 22. The initiative is being organised to remind people of the benefits of glass packaging and to promote glass recycling.

ROAD ACCIDENT: An elderly woman was taken to hospital with leg injuries after she was hit by a vehicle in Whinbush Way, Darlington. The 79-year-old was outside Asda supermarket on Wednesday at 5.10pm when the accident happened. She was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital.

CARTOON SHOW: Cartoons from publications such as Playboy, Private Eye and Punch are going on show in the North-East. Colliers, in Dean Street, Newcastle, will host a three-week exhibition featuring more than 150 cartoons, starting on June 7, from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.

PLANTING OUT: Children from Seton County Primary School, Scarborough, are doing their bit to make sure parts of Snaithes looks beautiful this summer. They will be helping to plant summer bedding flowers, geraniums, lobelia and petunias, in barrels at Captain Cooks Close.
