A TOWN'S long-established beauty queen contest faces the axe unless competitors come forward.
In the past three years the number of entries for the Miss Whitby contest has dwindled until last year there was only one, Georgina Peagan, who stepped in at the last minute.
So far no one has entered this year's competition. A spokesman for the 150-year-old Whitby Regatta, which attracts about 20,000 visitors each August, said: "Before we make a final decision on whether to run the contest we want to know what the people of Whitby think."
The spokesman said: "Girls just do not seem to want to enter the contest, which is a real shame because it has been an important part of the regatta weekend for years.
"The role of Miss Regatta has always been seen as that of an ambassador for Whitby's young generation."
