GAY couples will be allowed to 'marry' in East Cleveland.

The first same sex commitment ceremonies in the region took place in Darlington last month.

On Tuesday Redcar and Cleveland Borough councillors agreed to allow the ceremony, which has no legal status, to take place in East Cleveland, including Guisborough Registrar Office and Gisborough Hall.

Newcastle and South Tyneside councils have also agreed to allow commitment ceremonies to take place at council-approved venues. Redcar and Cleveland's cabinet committee agreed to allow the ceremonies, which will also be available to heterosexual couples.

Civic naming ceremonies for babies and public re-affirmation of marriage vows will also be accepted. Civil Ceremonies Ltd would provide the non-statutory ceremonies and pay a fee to the council.

The ceremonies will cost between £80 and £300 depending on venue and date.
