A PROJECT aimed at raising pupil attainment levels in Hartlepool have moved a step closer.

A grant totalling £300,000 has been provided jointly by the Government and the Football Foundation towards providing a classroom at Hartlepool United's ground.

The initiative, known as Playing for Success, has been set up by the Government in partnership with the FA Premier League, the Nationwide League and local councils.

The project still needs to secure further funding, but education officials are confident it will be reached.

The classroom will house the latest technology, and will be used to help raise standards in English, maths and information technology, mainly in years six to nine.

An experienced teacher will be based at the classroom, which will be used during and out of school hours.

Dawn Gilderoy, Hartlepool Borough Council's out of school learning co-ordinator, said: "Playing for Success has been very successful in other areas and we are delighted to team up with Hartlepool United on this ambitious scheme.

"A facility like this provides a completely different learning environment for pupils and the theme of football will be used in each of the three subject areas."

Ken Hodcroft, chairman of Hartlepool United, said: "We estimate the total capital cost of the project will be between £400,000 and £500,000, and we will be approaching businesses and other bodies to see if we can achieve the target."

Anyone interested in helping with funding is asked to contact Russ Green, at the club, on (01429) 272584.

It is hoped further funding will allow the project to start in September, with the classroom available next year.
