A 470-mile walk will pass through the region later this year to help raise awareness and funds for meningitis research.

Northallerton, in North Yorkshire, and Morpeth, in Northumberland, are two of 11 towns and villages across England that the charity walkers will visit.

The first letter from each of the villages visited on the walk - which is being called Step Towards a Country Free From Meningitis B - will spell out the word Meningitis B.

Starting in Morpeth on Saturday, September 27, and finishing in Bournemouth on Sunday, October 19, the walk will attract hundreds of people.

Walk organisers at Spencer Dayman Meningitis Laboratories are looking for people to either be sponsored to enter part of the walk or hold a collection in one of the towns it passes through.
