Worthington Durham County CIU Summer League: Newly promoted, Newhouse are setting a high standard in the First Division as they moved into second place following their home whitewash win over Fishburn A.

The home side had wins from Steve Mountain, Jimmy Hassen, Ronnie Pearson, John Maddox and Paul Wright. This victory put Newhouse two points behind Spennymoor A and two ahead of Brandon.

Tom Parkin played a captain's part for Willington when he took the only point for his side against the visiting league leaders from Spennymoor. The visitors had wins from Paul Biddle, Karl Welsh, Eddie Rhodes and Paul Atkinson.

Brandon pulled off a very good win over the visiting Witton Gilbert when Graham Barnett, who was making his debut, beat Ian Renwick in the decider. John Middleton had moved the home side ahead only to see Willis Joynes and John Rooney senior move Witton Gilbert in front. The decider was set up when John Hall won.

Sherburn Village, fourth in the table, went down to the visiting Newton Aycliffe. The visitors made certain of victory by taking the first three frames through Michael Hewitt, Bill Barrigan and Ronnie Hall. Sherburn recovered with Scott Mallaburn putting in a 30 break and John Bower winning to make the score respectable.

Wheatley Hill A recovered from their hiding last week to dish out a heavy defeat to the visiting Shotton Palms, who had Paul Hickman as their only winner. The Hill's winners were Dennis Clish, Dean Bryden, Dave Walker and Ronnie Peacock.

The top of the Second Division shows four teams, Meadowfield, Crowtrees, Ferryhill and Langley Park, sharing the top spot. In a key match, Crowtrees entertained Ferryhill and won by the odd point. Ferryhill took the first and last frames through Mark Wilson and Neil Spender, whilst Crowtrees went to victory with wins from Sonny Hann, Steven Armstrong and Keith McLauchlan.

Langley Park got among the leaders after they only dropped one point at Spennymoor B, who had Micky Anderson as their only winner. The Park's points came from Robert Roche, Kevin Keers, Ray Coates and Stephen Coates.

Meadowfield could have claimed the top spot to themselves but they went down by the odd point at home to Wheatley Hill B. The home side took the first and last frames through Craig Hughes and Stephen Hughes, whilst the Hill went to victory with wins from Dave Blyth, Ken Johnson and Steve Cave.

Crook Belle Vue are at the foot of the table, still without a win when they went down at Wingate. John Warriner gave the Crook side a great start but from there the home side took over with wins from Dave Hammond, Paul Harrison, Jim Mason and Steve Allen.

Durham City came close to making their first win of the season but eventually just failed in the decider when Frank Forster of Stanley Central beat Eric Wright. Stanley went ahead through Walter Cornell with Barry Stoddart levelling for the visitors. Jim Dufton restored the home lead but Gary Ward set up the decider.

Bearpark moved three points clear at the top of the Third Division when they whitewashed the visiting Tow Law A with wins from Alan Smith, Glen Morton, Shaun Easter, Alex Donaldson and David Jackson.

Coundon are in second place, two points ahead of Fishburn B, following their victory in the decider at Tow Law B. The visitors went two up with wins from Frank Nicholson and Steven Bennett. The home side equalised through John Wilson and Lee Stockdale but then Coundon took the match when Stuart Neil beat Paul Chollerton in the decider.

Fishburn B beat the visiting Leeholme A with wins from Jamie Hodgson, Keith Binks and Dave Wilson, whilst Lawrence Jones and Ian Catterson replied.

Leeholme B remained at the foot of the table when they only took one point from their home game against New Durham. Neil Phillips, Thomas Cairns, Kevin Scullion and Brian Birk put the visitors ahead. Adrian Prest prevented the whitewash when he beat Gordon Bowes in the final frame.

Sacriston were never headed when they visited Hunwick and won in the decider. Jeff Evans put the visitors ahead with Des Mason levelling. Alan Richardson restored the Sacriston lead only to see Tom Ward equalise. In the decider Sacriston's Mark Appleby beat Trevor Lomax.

Bishop Auckland Cricket Club proved a match for their neighbours at the Golf Club when they became the first team not to lose to the golfers this season. The visitors managed to pull off a draw and so double the amount of points that the Golf Club have lost this season. This result leaves the Golf Club four points clear at the top, with Darlington Cricket Club B in second place, four points ahead of their B team.

Bishop Auckland Gents Club altered the Second Division table when the B team ruined Northgate's 100 per cent record by holding them to a draw, whilst the A team moved up to share top spot after they whitewashed the former leaders, Barnard Castle Glaxo. Old Shildon moved into third place, just a point behind the joint leaders, whilst Glaxo slipped a further two behind.
