YOUNGSTERS in Whitby are risking their lives by jumping into the harbour.

The harbour master, Captain Bill Estill, said: "They are jumping off the swing bridge and both piers and climbing over the fence around the beacons. There is a ledge underneath and if they misjudge it they will kill themselves." He said the youngsters, some as young as ten, were swimming across the harbour and many of them were wearing wet or dry suits. Inspector Tim Hutchinson, of Whitby police, said: "I appeal to parents to stop their children from doing this. This is a busy harbour and not a safe place or a playground for children." He said patrols were being increased.
