Bream made a welcome appearance on the River Ure during the Ripon Piscatorials Annual Bradford Cup.

Staged on the deep section of the river below Barn Island the event attracted 65 rods and Ian Lumb of Turners Tackle won the match in the last two hours as the bream finally moved in.

Casting the groundbait feeder and worm to the end of the island Ian quickly netted five supplemented by a single chub to register a creditable 29.8.0 at the scales.

Hot on the winner's heels came Guiseley's Stuart Holt pegged above the noted diving board. Adopting identical tactics 5 smaller bream and four perch made for 28.2.0 from Martin Hope of Ripon who made up the rest of the twenty something weights when he recorded 23.10.0.

There was a fair bit of drama on the Tees during the Darlington and District Team Championships when torrential rain and thunder and lightning storms caused havoc for the 56 matchmen on the Over Dinsdale reaches.

The rain came down so fast the river rose a foot and trees crashed down smashing anglers tackle and lasting for over an hour.

Yet in between times sport was impressive and Alan Hird of Haughton came out on top returning 25.5.0.

Drawing two pegs above Rosehill Gutter, feeder fishing bread and meat attracted both chub and eels for victory.

Meanwhile runner up Bob Blenkinsop of Team Winners Darlington A put together an excellent roach and dace catch of 24.8.0. The stickfloat approach offering caster and hemp kept the fish coming off the Bolton Park runoff.

Team Result: 1 Darlington A 41 pts from jt 2nd Shildon A and Haughton A 39.

Over on the Swale at Swainby anglers were also subjected to the elements when storms lashed the river pushing the level up nearly a 12" for the latest Idle and Thackley AA Open.

Dave Potter of York Anglers World made the most of the testing conditions.

Fishing above Kirby Grove Island, Dave found the bomb and worm most effective taming 4 chub for 9.1.0.

A big barbel of 7.8.0 secured second place for Keighley's's Bob Roberts.

Legering meat brought the crucial specimen along with a few bits boosting his score to 7.13.0.

'Ton up' bags were firmly on the agenda at Woodlands and Tek Neek Trabucco Elton's Dean Smith became the first angler to top the ton on Kestrel Lake recording 103.0.0 during Wednesday's 94 pegger.

Red-hot peg 18 produced as Dean caught small carp on the meat against the boards early on but a switch to 15 metres presenting meat up in the water brought an incredible 60.0.0 in a hectic arm-aching two hours before the whistle to seal the new record.

Then on Saturday a sell-out field witnessed another Woodland's 'ton' when Dave Pimlott of Drennan Elton heaved 110.3.0 onto the scales for victory.

This time Skylark 32 made the headlines and once again an up in the water approach brought the fish on the feed resulting in a mixture of carp tench and silver fish alternating meat worm and caster hookbaits.

Round four of the Drennan Super League Northern Division was held on the complex and as usual it was action all the way with Kestrel Partridge & Skylark delivering plenty of carp action for all.

For the North Ormesby Institute squad Ritchie Brown forged ahead in the individual stakes hauling out 79.0.0.

Pulling out peg 24 on Partridge Lake, Ritchie stuck to the pellet at eight metres locating an all carp net.

The same bait also worked for runner up Dave Cooper on Skylark 19. The Shimano Quaker 'A' man swapped between 3 & 8 metres for another carp net to the tune of 75.5.0.

The powerful Newman Scott outfit won on the day scoring 65 points and with two matches remaining increase their lead by 13 points from Shimano Quaker 'A'.

Teams on the Day: 1 Newman Scott 65; jt 2 Diawa Cleveland & Anglers Services Durham 63; jt 4 Shimano Quaker A & North Ormesby Institute 61; 6 Shotton AC MG 59.

League to date: 1 Newman Scott 267; 2 Shimano Quaker 'A' 254; 3 Diawa Cleveland 250; 4 Shotton AC MG 215; jt 5 Big Waters & Anglers Services Durham 193.

Staying with big carp nets enthusiasts at the Oaks Sessay saw plenty of action and Sensas Garbolino's Mark Vanderkamp took Sunday's Open with 82.12.0.

Mark on Maple Lake's peg 63 worked the pole at 13 metres fishing caster 'up in the water,' as is the current trend in the heatwave conditions and netted specimens to 6.0.0.

Merlin Baits Terry Kenny also relied on 13 metres returning 64.10.0 of carp to chopped worm from the island ledge off peg 65.

Oaks (Thursday) Sessay: 1 John Brian (Harrogate Angling Supplies) 75.8.0 of carp; peg 62 at 8 & 13 metres on pellet & maggot. 2 Dean Smith (Tek Neek Trabucco Elton) 75.0.0; John Illingworth (Middy Team Dons) 67.14.0.
