The Hartlepool Motor Club's National Championship Autotest takes place on Sunday and has attracted an entry of 27 drivers from around Britain.

Local hopes rest with Paul Swift from Darlington who is bringing his Mini special to try and improve on last year's runners up spot.

Hartlepool drivers aren't competing as they are needed on the organising team but other local drivers are Durham's Richard Pinkney who is great to watch as he throws his Dutton kitcar sideways also Phil Mayne (Thornaby) in his Metro should have a steady run.

The Hartlepool event is the only Autotest in the country to give prize money plus trophies and wine with local companies showing their support for the event, particularly Tones Vauxhall and Fastsnacks.

The Autotest is Northern enthusiasts' only chance this year to see some of the motorsport's most skillful drivers in action with plenty of handbrake turns, reverse flicks, 360 deg spins and plenty of sideways driving.

There will be a free- 24 page programme and free admission for spectators.

Extra marshals are always required , no experience is required as training will be given.

Anyone interested should turn up at the car park (8am) onwards or phone Chris Langan (01429) 223949 work or (01429) 275615 home.

Two tests run at once throughout the day and will provide spectacular free entertainment in the Hartlepool Town Centre car park (rear of the Yorkshire Bank and next to the library in York Road) where spectators can watch in safety from the raised walkways from 10.30am to 4pm.
