VIRTUALLY every home in a road plagued by "rat-running" vehicles is backing a petition calling for action to deal with the problem.

Road humps and a chicane have been installed in Princess Road, Ripon but they have so far failed to curb ever-increasing flows of cars which used the road as a short cut from the Clock Tower area to the city's bypass.

Residents have now presented a petition calling for action to councillors.

It has been signed by 40 people, representing a signature from almost every home in the road.

The issue will now be considered by Ripon City Council's highways working group and also North Yorkshire County Council.

Petition organiser Leon Wooldridge said some residents had taken to sleeping in back bedrooms to avoid the constant noise from screeching brakes as drivers race to the series of humps then slow down.

"The road is supposed to be access only, but drivers just ignore the signs and come straight through to the bypass.

"The 30mph speed limit is ignored and some drivers just mount the footpath to avoid the humps.

"They simply drive alongside fences and garden walls, posing a risk to young children."
