VOLUNTEERS have transformed a neglected garden into a colourful public space.

Work started on the run-down Saltburn Library garden after the Probation Service enlisted the help of community service volunteers to clear weeds and re-lay dangerous paving stones.

They worked hard to plant shrubs and flowers and put tables and benches in place and yesterday, the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Norah Cooney, visited the garden.

Librarian Maggie Doyle said: "The result is absolutely stunning. The volunteers worked solidly for two months and did a magnificent job - we cannot thank them enough.

"The garden was an appalling mess and had been out of use for years, but if we had not had volunteer help, it would have stayed that way because labour costs would have been prohibitive.

"Now people who use the library can sit outside, especially in this summer's hot weather, and read books or newspapers in tranquil surroundings."

Organisations and individuals donated plants and the Saltburn 500 Club donated two benches made by people with learning disabilities at Upsall Hall, Nunthorpe.

Two tables and benches were also donated by the Saltburn Victorian Footballers and Friends, a group of community-minded business people, to complete the garden.

Profits from the library's Friday afternoon refreshment service will go towards its upkeep.
