A SUMMIT meeting next week could help to open lines of communication between a council and the people it serves.

Political journalist Tony Baker will grill senior Durham County Council officials about its services.

He will put them on the spot over experiences of council tax-payers dealing with the authority.

Members of the public will also have a chance to make individual inquiries of council staff and have their say on how they would like to be consulted and involved in council policy decision-making.

As part of Local Democracy Week, the summit will be at the Glebe Centre, Murton, on Tuesday, from 5pm to 7.30pm.

Although it is being held in east Durham, the forum is open to people from across the county.

Councillor John Davies, community development portfolio holder on the county council cabinet, will be in the hot seat on the night.

"The event has already attracted a lot of interest from across the county and we're hoping for a full house, on Tuesday," he said.

"I'm sure it will help us to learn some valuable lessons and improve the way we respond to people and their needs."

Anyone wanting to take part in the summit can contact Alex O'Donnell, on 0191-374 0523. Refreshments, transport and creche facilities will be provided.
