A CRIME spree in Heighington last month has led to pleas for more people to volunteer as Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators.

The number of crimes in the last quarter, from July to September, was 14, with eight of those committed last month. There were only ten crimes committed in the village in the previous six months.

Beat officer, PC Julian Brown, said: "This is the highest monthly crime figure I can remember in Heighington in my six years on this beat."

Offences included two house burglaries committed during the daytime.

PC Brown said at the village's Neighbourhood Watch meeting: "People have been roaming around committing crime, they have been here, but we have had hardly any information from local people.

"People like this make a living from crime and they will go out of their way to dress in a way that will not draw attention to themselves, they won't look out of place and may be that's why people have not noticed them."

Members of the Neighbourhood Watch group decided they needed to recruit more members to try to make sure everyone in the village is aware when a crime has taken place.

Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators keep an eye on their own streets and keep their neighbours informed of any crimes in the area.
